Unseen Eyes, Unheard Stories: Surveillance, Data Protection and Freedom of Expression in Kenya and Uganda During COVID-19

ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa (EA), the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) and Pollicy would like to invite you to a virtual webinar on ‘Surveillance, Data Protection and Freedom of Expression during COVID-19 in Kenya and Uganda.’ The webinar will take place on Wednesday 21 April, 2021 from 10:00AM to 11:30AM on Zoom (see program below).

Addressing the coronavirus pandemic has required effective responses by governments, private actors and the international community generally, including tracking the infection rates and preventing the spread of the coronavirus disease. However, tackling the COVID-19 public health crisis in Kenya and Uganda was not matched with a prioritisation of human rights protections, which raises significant risks for the rights to privacy, freedom of expression and access to information.

During the webinar, we will be launching the Surveillance, Data Protection and Freedom of Expression during COVID-19 in Kenya and Uganda’ report. This report launch will be accompanied by a live screening of the lived experiences of individuals in Kenya and Uganda with pandemic surveillance measures.
