KICTANet Pays Courtesy Visit to The Communications Authority

KICTANet paid a courtesy visit to the Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya to introduce the organisation and discuss potential areas of collaboration in 2024.

The KICTANet team, led by its Board of Trustee Chair, Mr. Ali Hussein, and CEO, Dr. Grace Githaiga, congratulated the DG on his appointment to the role.

They also provided an overview of KICTANet’s mission, vision, and history of engagement with the CA. These included KICTANet’s various initiatives, including its capacity-building programs, policy advocacy efforts, research projects, and stakeholder engagement activities.

Key among these included the Kenya IGF, KeSIG, Take on Tech show, gender and ICT, community networks, an ICT policy sector review and various research publications and policy briefs on topical ICT issues.

“The CA has been a beacon of engagement regarding ICT issues,” noted Mr. Ali. “The CA has supported the Kenya Internet Governance Forum since 2008.”

Mr. David Mugonyi, the CA Director General, and his colleagues outlined the CA’s priority areas for 2024, which they indicated were aligned with KICTANet’s programmes.

Both parties underscored the need for continued collaboration in policy development, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and research.

“We recognise the role you (KICTANet) play,” remarked Mr. Mugonyi, adding that “at the core of the ICT issues in Kenya, our business as CA is to ensure a proper environment that advances what we do in building a sustainable digital society through responsive regulation.”

“We will continue to partner within this space to ensure a clean internet; people not served to get connected.”

Representatives from KICTANet included Trustees – Mr. Victor Kapiyo, Mr. Barrack Otieno, Ms.Elizabeth Orembo, Mr. Mwendwa Kivuva and Secretariats: Ms. Neema Mujesia and Mr. David Indeje.

The representatives from CA included Mr Christopher Kemei, Director, Universal Service Fund; CS Lydia Sitienei, Director, Legal Services and Corporation Secretary; Ms Rebecca Kabugu, Office of the Director-General; Ms Everlyne Njoki, CA Brand and Ms Lydia Sitienei, Director, Legal Services and Corporation Secretary.

This meeting signified a positive step towards continued collaboration between KICTANet and the CA to promote a more inclusive and accessible digital space in Kenya.
